Richardson appoints Shendo replacement at Indian Affairs Department

Gov. Bill Richardson has appointed Teresa C. Gomez to serve as acting secretary of Indian Affairs to replace outgoing secretary Benny Shendo, who plans to announce his run for Congress this week.

Gomez was appointed to serve as deputy cabinet secretary for the New Mexico Indian Affairs Department in June 2006. In that role, she was appointed to serve on the Governor's Women's Health Advisory Council and the State-Tribal DWI Task Force. She has also represented the Department on the Children's Cabinet, Behavioral Health Planning Council and the Behavioral Health Purchasing Collaborative.

Gomez is a New Mexico native and a member of the Pueblo of Isleta. She holds a bachelor's degree and a master's degree, both in political science, from the University of New Mexico. She will serve in the post while a search for a permanent secretary takes place.

Shendo was the first cabinet-level secretary in the department, which was created in 2004 and was the first of its kind in the country, according to Richardson's office.

"Benny Shendo has provided thoughtful leadership and I'm grateful for his service," Richardson said in a news release.

Shendo plans to make a formal announcement on Dec. 20 that he will run for the Third Congressional District seat, currently held by U.S. Rep. Tom Udall, D-NM. Udall is running for the Senate post being vacated (at the end of his term next year) by U.S. Senator Pete Domenici, R-NM. Domenici, who was elected to the Senate in 1972, announced earlier this year that he will not seek re-election next year because of his health.
